 Nadia Freeman's poetic, poignant
Another Universe
at Basement Theater 25 - 29 October

Ever wondered what might have been if you hadn’t taken that job? Didn’t catch the return flight home? Stayed with your ex? Spoken word artist Miss Leading presents her solo show, Another Universe, using poetry, visual and audio design to share the stories of other lives, in an exploration of choice and chance.

Fresh from sold-out performances at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Wellington-based Miss Leading, aka Nadia Freemen, brings her heralded show Another Universe to Tāmaki Makaurau's Basement Theatre this October 25 - 29.

Miss Leading/Nadia Freeman is a spoken word poet and musician who has formed a strong reputation in both Scotland and New Zealand. Her solo shows have sold out at 2021 New Zealand Fringe, Kia Mau Festival and 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

In 2021, Nadia performed Eat These Words, her first solo show, in Wellington, which garnered such high praise that she was invited to run a season at Kia Mau Festival in July of that year. The Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of Arts loved Eat These Words, afterwards commissioning Nadia to write a new piece of theatre - the result of which is the engrossing, poetic and probing Another Universe.

Another Universe debuted as part of the online 2022 Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of Arts, receiving great reviews by multiple review sites, cited as 'a jewel box of a piece' (TheatreReview.org.nz), 'blending acting and spoken word poetry beautifully' (WellingtonReviews.co.nz).

The dialogue is entirely in poetic format, a stylistically unique take on performance. The rhythm of the delivery is reminiscent of a Shakespearean play - once the brain eases into the cadence and poetry, the undulating verse entertains for the duration of the work. Exposed to a different way of receiving and absorbing words, audiences have been thrilled with the experience of being immersed in this flow of language.

Nadia has enjoyed the process of developing this unique piece: ‘I haven’t seen other shows that have relied on poetic format as the only device for storytelling.  It has been an exciting challenge that I believe has resulted in something original and special.’

She describes her show as ‘a way to look at ourselves and the influence our choices can have on note just what happens to us, but who we are as people and with that reflect on the politics that drive our choices on a global, societal and individual level. The show explores concepts around sexuality, conflict and feminism.’

Another Universe went on to be accepted into Edinburgh's cutting-edge Hidden Door Festival in June 2022, in addition to Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2022, the culmination of which was a sold-out room and rave social reviews.

Don't miss this opportunity to see a rising creative talent at The Basement Theatre for the Tāmaki Makaurau premier of Another Universe.
